We're proud to welcome the debut release on Monotonik from Stefan Ternemar, the Swedish artist also known as S.T. 'Emotions In A Box' is Stefan's first set of songs released anywhere outside his own webpage, and it's a fitting introduction to his bold, melodically strident idm electronics. First off would be 'Downtown', almost Huelsbeck-ian in its wish to get straight down to brass tacks and blast you with carefully considered catchiness, heaping layer upon layer of gorgeously synthetic sounds...

Welcome to Monotonik's brand new year, courtesy of a debut release (or is it?) from Finn and self-proclaimed cosmic superspy, Aleksi Virta. He fearlessly busts out this supremely accomplished album of jazzy, dubby electronics, originally released on a scandalously limited, horrendously collectible 100-copy sold-out CDR edition, and now, thankfully available to the general public via the wonders of the Internet. So basically, we're looking at everything from the headnodding organ jam of 'Nebulae...

A long, long time in the making, U.S. artist Troupe presents his first EP for Monotonik, 'It's Really Pretty Simple After All', a plain spectacular mix of demo-scene inspired electronica, soaring melodies, and beautiful vocals. Imagine, if you will, an American who has grown up and been musically influenced by the greats of the Amiga demo-scene - which this label itself was birthed from in 1996. Then mix in transcendent vocals reminiscent of favorite Monotonik releases like Bliss, and you get...

We found Datassette after he linked to Monotonik from his own artist website. Fortunately, it turns out that he hearts us, and we heart him, since the UK-based artist with the retro-hardware themed pseudonym cuts up a lovely mix of previous Monotonik artists like Vim! and Braces Tower, alternating funky electronica with the geekier bleep end of the spectrum, but coming out all wine and roses in the originality stakes. Starting out with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop drift of 'Microfocus', it's...

Oh my. Ever since we at Monotonik heard Swedish bleep-metal group Machinae Supremacy cover Chris Huelsbeck's classic 'Great Giana Sisters' theme in heart-rendingly wonderful .SID chiptune vs. Spinal Tap style, we've been major, major fans. So, after the group completed the soundtrack to (extremely fun) PC indie shoot-em-up Jets 'N Guns ( http://jng.rakeingrass.com/ ), and made the entire higher-bitrate quality OST available to fans on their official homepage ( http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/...

This time, a Monotonik debut for Finnish graphic artist and musician Flutterspot, and pretty much his first music release anywhere, with the gorgeous electronic tones of 'Labmat'. What do we like about this? Well, for starters, 'Daily Sway Of Everything (That You Touch)' is satisfyingly chunky, before 'Sky So My' segues into some smartly rotating beats. Then, there's 'Liihko Hymn', which is layers and layers of sound in an almost shoegaze fashion, but with firm rhythms layered on top, before...

Having discovered Japanese techno artist Tatsu from his wonderful early work on his net.label Bumpfoot, we co-opted him to do an exclusive new EP on Monotonik, and the immensely lush 6-track 'August EP' is the result, showcasing the immensely pure, almost Detroit-tinged pastoral electronica - no tricks, no feints, just a trip back to the classics. We start with 'Stillness/Introspective Me', which briefly showcases some gorgeous ambience, before moving straight into 'Sky and Sea/Daytime Dream',...

Seriously, what else is there to say about Finnish old-school Amiga demo scene legend Aleksi Eeben, aka Heatbeat? Way back in 1990 or so, when he was in his early teens, he produced some of the best music the Amiga has ever heard. As his talent grew throughout the '90s and into the new century, his jazz influences and unique retro electronic background (he also codes music composition software for the Commodore 64, Game Boy and even VIC-20) have produced an unbelievably unique style. The...

Following the release of the first "Aze" album from Dutch artist Izmar, earlier this year, we carefully guarded the follow-up, containing more excellent chilled instrumental tracks recorded around the same time, which all ready to go. So, go now it does, and for fans of Fila Brazillia, Max Brennan, or any other deliciously funky chill hybrid shenanigans, you may, indeed, have a second treat in store. It's difficult to pick out specific standouts in this uniformly lush album, but...

Although sometimes overlooked, due to their release on Monotonik's lesser-known sublabel Mono211, the two albums we've put out so far by Dutch ex-techno producer Izmar are, everyone seems to agree, pretty damn special, twinning Fila Brazillia style grooves with gorgeous melodies. Some of the releasers on Monotonik are more mysterious than others. But we quite enjoy it when the more shadowy ones turn up, slip us a gorgeous piece of music, and then slink away into the ether again. Finnish old-school Amiga demo scene legend Aleksi Eeben, aka Heatbeat, has never really let up on the composition, but has, rather wonderfully, regressed in his choice of hardware over time, from Amiga, through Commodore 64, to Vic-20, with sideways glances to the Game Boy. A long time in the making and finally here (thanks to the contributors for their patience!), this EP gathers together 8 different re-interpretations of one of the greatest videogame soundtracks ever, from arguably the greatest game ever, Shigeru Miyamoto's 1991 SNES classic "Super Mario World". Koji Kondo's sublime original score has been subverted by a number of idm-listers and Monotonik collaborators, and the results, we're sure you'll agree, are interesting, to say the least. From...

It's good to come back to what you know, and we felt like UK artist Braces Tower , previously member of the Wiija-signed, Radiohead-supporting, Peel Session-ing Loveblobs way back in the mists of time, was due another release on Monotonik with his delightful blend of sass, electronics, and intelligent sampledelica, since his first ' Pshhh EP ' was so well received by all a year or two back. So we asked him nicely, and the round-up compilation 'Pasteism' is the unholy result. So there's a great...

We've now been releasing tracks from UK electronic wunderkid Vim! for, well, seven and a half years, on both .MOD and this 'new-fangled' .MP3. That's quite a long time, certainly by netlabel standards. And since we started up, he's released albums on Surgery Records, remixes on Merck and Carpark, and a host of EPs on Monotonik. So, we're now delighted to be able to present an MP3 version of his recent, _extremely_ smart, _extremely_ limited edition CDR, 'A Random Collection Of Consonants', on...

Japanese artist Sabi , aka Taro Peter Little, has been releasing on Monotonik since the late '90s, when we were called Mono, and his .MODs under the name of Taro were, heh, almost controversial for being lo-fi and crunchy. Since then, he also released the 'Four Thousand Years EP' , and has also had tracks and remixes on compilations from Merck, Saag Records, and Hydrogen Dukebox. Anyhow, 'Unsui EP' is a beautifully ambient collection of 4 tracks that Sabi compiled specially for Monotonik...

He's done it again. He's found some vocals no-ones sampled yet (as far as he knows). He's sped them up and pitched them to infinity. He's laid a break over a kickdrum and he's put a synth stab on every half beat. He's also come up with one of the worst dinosaur-related puns ever. Yea, verily DJ Ninjamachine has entered the building, bringing with him yet more of the good mindless happy stuff. And in time our history Will know us as shooting stars I ask for nothing more Than a place to lie down...

Well, we certainly don't release many DJ sets here at Monotonik - in fact, the last one was over 2 years ago, wow. And the main reason for this is that there's very few good eclectic mixes out there. Until now, that is. We first heard the mixing skills of Chicago's ~aD being spread via, of all places, Usenet. So we're proud to present the first of a number of stunning DJ sets we're going to put out from him - hop on the "Pharis Wheel" :P So, why do we love this mix so much? Well,...

Another Monotonik DJ-mix wanders brightly your way, and this time it's from long-time Portugese Mono associate, Rents, who's mixed up this rather lovely 73-minute cut-up, featuring everything from the obvious but gorgeous Aphex remixes and Kreidler to the inspired (Snooze - "Your Consciousness Goes Bip" - a forgotten classic, for one!) With environmental effects cleverly mixed in, and real-time tracklisting and graphics on the streaming version, courtesy of Realplayer G2, this is...

Well, Subi tries to confound us again with one of his completely unclassifiable songs, just when we've decided to put our techno output on a sublabel. Thanks _so_ much. ;) This tune definitely rules, but should it go out on Mono or Monotonik? Well, think of it this way - do mad screaming Prodigy-style songs full of guitar get played out more by the Chemical Brothers or the Aphex Twin? Yep, Chemicals every time, and since this is a close relative to jungle and a distant cousin of bigbeat, it...

Finnish musician Olavi Inha has previously released on Monotonik with two memorable releases under his Flutterspot alias. But he returns here with another pseudonym, Clark Vent, and with it brings a charming full album of bleepy, semi-abstract uptempo electronic deliciousness in the form of 'Scene Sexshun'. Sure, 'Pardon Me, Clark Kent' is a sensible start, all up and down and around the houses, but the amusingly named 'Hello A Lot And Yes Disco' is a much better statement of intent, crazy...

Wowee, a first release for Distance on the breakbeat-ish Mono211, and this time it's a real interesting blend between his conventional unconventionality and a new sub-bass and sharp breaks style. Original, I warrant, and pretty clever with it. And the name is.. well, it makes sense to you, doesn't it?

Wandering and wondering at the same time, artists such as Distance and Jiva define the unique Monotonik style, and this interpretation by Viinikala (of an unreleased Distance track) glides slowly along the same heavenly path. We've got the deliciously pure synthsounds, we've got the pulsing atoms pulsing the atmospherics, and it all adds up to the smallest slice of chilled serendipity. Comparisons? Naaah. :)

The long-awaited mixes from the number one scene luddite are finally HERE! Yes, the first of Subi's retro DJ sets is upon us. We hope you like. The general idea is to do a few of these, grouping by type. This time around we're concentrating on the proto-hardcore European brutalism sound that started when Joey Beltram came up with "Mentasm" and T99 turned its famous stab into an unholy racket on "Anastasia". So, not quite into the classic period yet, but certainly getting...

Subi returns with another unique experience - late analogue synths and tinges of happy hardcore make for an early-Prodigy influenced belter. Listen to the track build, and build, and build.. hmm, 'A500 Luddism' sounds pretty, uhh, interesting from where I'm standing. :)

One of the first all-ambient releases on Monotonik in quite some time, this 3-track EP from relatively undiscovered Japanese artist Akira Kosemura is a beautifully naturalistic drift through what sounds like field recordings twinned with sweet sine waves melodies - reminiscent of anything from Lackluster at his most ambient to fellow Japanese Monotonik releaser Sabii. Thus, we have three delicate treats to enjoy - firstly, 'Forest In The Morning' has a repeated motif and an almost sepuchral...

The latest release for guitar and beat-strewn idm artist Beak on Monotonik, following the 'Amoral Mayor Earwig EP' back in 2004 and 'El Hacedor EP' in 2005, the 'Bishop Whitney EP' continues his extremely unique mix of strongly played guitar, acoustic noises and cut-up percussion in fine, fine style. This time, we start out with the characteristic plucked freneticism of 'Context Clues', before seguing into the languid crawl of 'Teach Texas Manner', further showcasing his totally individual,...

Already out on 'limited dub plate' lha-archive release, but only available to the very luckiest of Amiga owners, this storming intelligent drum+bass track now comes out via official Mono methods. Turn those speakers _up_, sonny, before we come round and tell you to turn them up some more. And watch out for a "Minimal Response EP" from the utterly charming blonde Substance-abuser.

The first EP release online from Monotonik, and that quirky English idm-ster, 3818919/w, comes up trumps with some beautiful tracks influenced by everything from Bola through Bochum Welt to Plone. The lead track, "Nachos Supreme", is full of wonderfully twisty riffs and nimble drums, and "Ages" and "Cheshire" float into melodic ambience of the slightly surreal, fevered kind, whilst the final tune, "Shift-Break", uses clunks and robot voices to bring the...

We're proud to present a Monotonik debut from Danish artist Delayscape, formerly part of the electronic collective Swimwear Catalogue, which has released CDs on April Records and Hypnotic in Denmark. As Delayscape, he's released on net.labels Acrylik and Clusterflux, and also plays live in a band called Rainscape, but for this first Monotonik EP, 'Everybody Drops', it's terse melodic electro all the way to the bank. We here at Monotonik vehemently enjoy mixing up the brand-new idm goodness with some beeptastic sinewaviness from back in the day.
